Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is one of the most common oral health concerns in the United States. It occurs when bacteria from the mouth build up along the gum line and on the teeth. The bacteria cause inflammation and irritation, which ultimately leads to the formation of cavities, tartar, and gum recession.
There are a number of factors that can increase your risk of developing this condition. Some of these include:
Flossing removes plaque and food from between teeth, but it’s important to make sure you’re not missing any spots when you’re brushing and flossing. If you don’t floss your entire mouth twice a day, you’re probably leaving some plaque behind. Plaque buildup can lead to gingivitis and gum disease. Luckily, if you catch it in the early stages, you can reverse it and prevent permanent damage to the gums.
People who smoke cigarettes, cigars, or pipes are more likely to develop gum disease than those who do not smoke or use other forms of tobacco. Other forms of tobacco use, including chewing tobacco and snuff, can cause gum recession and lead to disease. Heavy use of alcohol can also contribute to gum disease; it is better to drink in moderation.
A poor diet that lacks proper nutrition can also lead to gum disease. It is important to eat a well-balanced diet to ensure the body has all of the vitamins and minerals it needs to remain healthy. Some vitamins that are good for the teeth and gums include vitamin D, vitamin C, and calcium. To find out which foods offer these nutrients, speak with a dentist or dietician.
When women take birth control pills, they may also experience an increased risk for gum disease. Hormonal changes that occur when taking birth control pills cause your gum tissue to be more sensitive than normal, making it easier for plaque to develop and eventually lead to gingivitis. It is best to talk with a doctor about possible alternative birth control methods if you are concerned about your risk of developing periodontal problems.
Some people are just more susceptible to getting cavities and/or gum disease than others. Unfortunately, there isn’t much you can do about this risk factor. If you are susceptible to gum disease, make sure you’re taking the time to brush and floss your teeth daily. That will help reduce your risk.
When it comes to oral health, stress can be as damaging as an infectious disease. When you’re stressed, your body produces more hormones, which can increase blood pressure and cause inflammation throughout the body, including your mouth. These effects can cause gum inflammation and increase the odds of an infection occurring. If you notice that your gums are bleeding when you’re stressed or feeling anxious, make sure to address it with your Tampa dentist right away.
